如報道所示：我們漢語中所言的“屋子鬧鬼”，用英語可表示為“The house is
haunted”。Haunted源于動詞haunt（鬼神出沒），既然是“鬼神”，一定是以超自然的形態(tài)出沒宅地了，由此“鬧鬼”通常以被動形式出現(xiàn)，被隱去的“鬼怪”嘛，留給聽者想象嘍。
Haunt除表示“鬼神出沒”外，也可用來指“經(jīng)常去某地”或“經(jīng)常去的地方”，如：As a girl, she used to haunt the
local cinema.（還是小女孩時，她常去當(dāng)?shù)氐碾娪霸?。）This pub used to be one of my uncle's favourite
haunts.（這家小酒店是我叔叔過去常去的地方之一。）
另外，人們也常用huant來形容心頭揮之不去的東西，漢語中的“縈繞”很恰切地表達了該詞的內(nèi)蘊，如：I was haunted by his last
words to me.（他最后的話語總在我心頭縈繞。）
