The Asian Games are also called the Asiad for short. Like the Olympic Games, these games are the largest multi-sport event in Asia.
The Asian Games came from the 1st Oriental Olympics (also called the Far East Championships). These were held in Manila in 1913. The Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong competed for eight days. Nine were held from 1913 to 1934. The 10th was cancelled because of war. The 1st West Asia Games were held in India in 1934, with Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, India and Palestine. In 1948, Asian sports leaders started the Asian Games Federation (AGF) in New Delhi. In 1982, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) was formed.
The Asian Games are held every four years allowing athletes from all over Asia to compete. They are organized and regulated by the OCA under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Athletes are entered into the competition through member committees in each country. If an athlete wins gold, his or her national anthem is played. Silver and bronze medal winners are also honored on the podium.
