在廈門經(jīng)濟特區(qū)建設40周年之際，中共中央總書記、國家主席、中央軍委主席習近平發(fā)來賀信。習近平在賀信中指出，40年來，廈門經(jīng)濟特區(qū)開拓創(chuàng)新、銳意進取，各項事業(yè)實現(xiàn)歷史性跨越，為改革開放和社會主義現(xiàn)代化建設作出重要貢獻，在促進祖國統(tǒng)一大業(yè)中發(fā)揮了獨特作用。廈門經(jīng)濟特區(qū)建設40周年慶祝大會12月21日在福建省廈門市舉行，會上宣讀了習近平的賀信。
President Xi Jinping has sent a congratulatory letter on the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Xiamen Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in east China's Fujian province. The letter by Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, was read out on Dec 21 at a gathering marking the anniversary in Xiamen. Xi commended the SEZ for breaking new ground and conducting innovative practices and making historic strides in various respects over the past 40 years, adding that the SEZ has made important contributions to the country's reform, opening-up, and socialist modernization, and played a unique role in promoting national reunification.

1980年10月，國務院批準在廈門島北部湖里劃出2.5平方公里，設立廈門經(jīng)濟特區(qū)。一年后，隨著湖里工地上一聲爆破巨響，廈門經(jīng)濟特區(qū)建設大幕正式拉開。
1985年，國務院批準廈門經(jīng)濟特區(qū)擴大到全島。此后，中央又相繼批準設立海滄、杏林、集美三個臺商投資區(qū)和象嶼保稅區(qū)。2010年中央又批準廈門經(jīng)濟特區(qū)擴大到全市。一系列政策疊加，廈門形成了全方位、多層次的對外開放格局。

40年來，廈門在兩岸三通直航、經(jīng)貿合作、人員往來、文化交流、基層政黨交流等方面不斷有“破冰”之舉，持續(xù)深化兩岸交流合作綜合配套改革，建設兩岸新興產(chǎn)業(yè)和現(xiàn)代服務業(yè)合作示范區(qū)、兩岸金融中心、東南國際航運中心、對臺貿易中心等“一區(qū)三中心”，廈臺集成電路、平板顯示等產(chǎn)業(yè)合作結出碩果。
黨的十八大以來，隨著自貿試驗區(qū)、海絲核心區(qū)、金磚國家新工業(yè)革命伙伴關系創(chuàng)新基地等一系列國家戰(zhàn)略相繼落地，廈門正在從更高層面探索多層次、全方位、綜合性經(jīng)濟開放格局。

The Xiamen Special Economic Zone (SEZ) needs to adhere to the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, base itself in a new stage of development, implement the new development philosophy and serve and integrate itself into the new development paradigm. The SEZ should deepen reform and opening-up across the board, promote high-quality growth and work toward integrated development across the Taiwan Straits. The SEZ must take the lead in attaining socialist modernization and make greater contributions to the building of a modern socialist nation and achieving the country's second centenary goal.
