你問我答

多義詞 bother 的用法

內(nèi)容簡(jiǎn)介

一位聽眾想知道多義詞 “bother” 都有哪些用法。在日常會(huì)話中,“No bother.”、“Don't bother.”、“I'm not bothered.”、“I can't be bothered.” 這些包含 “bother” 的句子很常用。它們的意思是什么,應(yīng)該怎么使用?在這些句子中,單詞 “bother” 的意思一樣嗎?本期 “你問我答” 節(jié)目詳細(xì)講解 “bother” 的常見用法。

(關(guān)于臺(tái)詞的備注: 請(qǐng)注意這不是廣播節(jié)目的逐字稿件。本文稿可能沒有體現(xiàn)錄制、編輯過程中對(duì)節(jié)目做出的改變。)

Jiaying
Erm, sorry to bother you, but do you think you're ready to start the programme now?

Beth
Oh, sorry! Hello and welcome to Question and Answer of the Week. I'm Beth.

Jiaying
And I'm Jiaying. 本期節(jié)目中,我們要來講一講單詞 “bother” 的用法。先來聽一下問題:

Question
I would like to know the common uses of the word 'bother' in daily English conversation. For example, 'No bother. ', 'Don't bother. ', 'I'm not bothered. ' What does 'bother' mean in these sentences?

Jiaying
單詞 “bother” 的用法有很多,我在節(jié)目的一開始對(duì) Beth 說:“Sorry to bother you.”,意思就是 “不好意思,打擾你了”。

Beth
And we have a lot more examples to give you. 'Bother' is usually used as a verb, but it can be used as a noun too.

Jiaying
沒錯(cuò),“bother” 通常作動(dòng)詞使用,但它其實(shí)也可以作名詞使用。

先來看看 “bother” 原本的字面意思。作動(dòng)詞時(shí),“bother” 可以表示 “努力,盡力,費(fèi)心”。在表達(dá)這個(gè)含義時(shí),“bother” 更常用在否定句中。

Beth
That's right. So, Jiaying, I have friends coming round for dinner tonight. And I said I'd cook, but, as you know, I'm a bit tired and I can't be bothered, so I might suggest we get a takeaway instead.

Jiaying
“Can't be bothered” 的字面意思是 “不想費(fèi)力氣做某事”,也就是我們平時(shí)總是說的 “懶得做…”。注意,我們更常在英式英語交流中聽到人們使用 “can't be bothered”。You can't be bothered to cook, so you might get a takeaway.

Beth
Now, we can also use the expression 'don't bother' when we think someone else shouldn't make the effort. This could be because you know they don't want to, or you know it's a lot of effort for them.

Jiaying
That's right. 當(dāng)我們想告訴他人 “別費(fèi)事了,不用麻煩了” 的時(shí)候,就可以說 “Don't bother.”。來聽用動(dòng)詞 “bother” 表示 “費(fèi)時(shí)間或精力做某事” 的一個(gè)例句和一段對(duì)話。

Examples
Don't bother baking bread! It's much quicker and cheaper to buy it.
(你不用費(fèi)事烤面包!在外面買面包既省時(shí)又便宜。)

A: I can't be bothered getting changed into a suit.
(A:我懶得換西服了。)
B: Don't bother! You look smart enough already.
(B:別麻煩了!你看起來已經(jīng)很精神了。)

Beth
'Bother' can also be used when something has the potential to upset or annoy someone.

Jiaying
“Bother” 還有 “使人感到煩惱、擔(dān)憂、不安” 的意思。比如:“It bothers me.(這件事情讓我感到很煩惱。)”

Beth
More commonly, we hear the opposite, 'it doesn't bother me', which means 'it doesn't annoy or upset me'.

Jiaying
“It doesn't bother me.(這件事情我不介意,這件事情并沒有讓我感到困擾。)” 我們來聽兩個(gè)例句。

Examples
It really bothers me when you play the trumpet at 9pm.
(你晚上9點(diǎn)吹小號(hào),真的讓我很煩。)

You hate the rain, but it really doesn't bother me. I quite like it.
(你討厭下雨,但下雨一點(diǎn)也不讓我心煩。我很喜歡雨天。)

Beth
It's used in a similar way for politeness. Earlier, when I was feeling a bit tired, you said "Sorry to bother you".

Jiaying
沒錯(cuò),“Sorry to bother you.” 并不是說 “抱歉我讓你心煩了”,而是一種與人搭話時(shí)用到的禮貌說法,相當(dāng)于 “不好意思,打擾你了?!?這里,“bother” 的意思是 “打擾,煩擾”。

Beth
Instead of the verb, you could've used a noun in this phrase instead, 'sorry to be a bother'.

Jiaying
要想回復(fù)上面說的 “Sorry to bother you.” 或 “Sorry to be a bother.”,我們可以說 “No bother.(沒事的,不要緊。)”,相當(dāng)于 “No problem.” 和 “Don't worry.”。來聽一段對(duì)話。

Example
A: Sorry to be a bother, but could you help me with this heavy box please?
(A:不好意思,打擾你了。你能幫我搬一下這個(gè)很重的箱子嗎?)
B: No bother. Let me help you.
(B:沒問題。我來幫你。)

Jiaying
“Bother” 作動(dòng)詞時(shí),還有另一個(gè)用法,那就是用在表達(dá) “I'm not bothered.” 當(dāng)中。When do we use this expression?

Beth
This expression can be used when trying to be polite and gives other people a chance to give their opinion instead.

Jiaying
我們可以用 “I'm not bothered.” 來表示 “我無所謂,我怎樣都行”。來聽一段對(duì)話。

Example
A: Should I make us a pot of tea or a pot of coffee?
(A:我來給咱倆泡壺茶還是煮壺咖啡?)
B: I'm not bothered. What would you prefer?
(B:我怎樣都行。你想喝什么?)
A: Coffee, I think.
(A:我想還是喝咖啡吧。)
B: Let's have that then.
(B:那就喝咖啡吧。)

Jiaying
在上面的對(duì)話中,我們并不知道女士是不是出于禮貌才使用了 “I'm not bothered.”,還是說喝茶或喝咖啡,她真的哪一種都無所謂。

Beth
But some people also use 'I'm not bothered' to mean 'I don't care', which can be seen as impolite.

Jiaying
是的,有一些人會(huì)用 “I'm not bothered.” 來表達(dá) “我不在乎” 的意思,所以需要注意使用的語氣、場(chǎng)合和對(duì)象。

Example
I'm not bothered what you wear to the party. Just get dressed so we can go.
(我不在乎你穿什么去參加聚會(huì)。趕緊穿好我們就可以出發(fā)了。)

Beth
Sorry to bother you, Jiaying, but do you think we can summarise now?

Jiaying
Sure! No bother. “Bother” 這個(gè)詞的用法多樣。動(dòng)詞 “bother” 可以表示 “費(fèi)力,盡力”。比如,想表達(dá) “懶得做某事”,就說 “can't be bothered”;想表達(dá) “別費(fèi)事了”,可以說 “Don't bother.”。

動(dòng)詞 “bother” 還有 “使人感到煩惱或困擾” 的意思。比如,“It bothers me that…” 和 “It doesn't bother me.”

當(dāng)我們想要禮貌地與人搭話的時(shí)候,也可以用 “bother”。比如:“Sorry to bother you.” 或 “Sorry to be a bother.(不好意思,打擾你了。)” 想回復(fù) “沒事的,不要緊”,就可以說 “No bother.” 這里的 “bother” 是名詞。

我們還能用 “not bothered” 來表示 “我無所謂,我怎樣都行”,但是要注意使用的語氣、場(chǎng)合和對(duì)象。
