Boris Johnson has broken rules that prevent former cabinet ministers taking up new jobs for three months after leaving office. The former foreign secretary failed to get permission from the government's appointments watchdog for his role as a columnist for the Daily Telegraph. He gave it up when he was appointed foreign secretary in July 2016. Despite breaking the rules, it was unlikely Johnson would be punished. The advisory committee on business appointments (Acoba) has been criticized as a "toothless watchdog" because it does not have powers to sanction former ministers who do not follow its advice. Angela Browning, the chair of Acoba, said that former ministers and senior civil servants who do not follow its advice should face criminal prosecution.

A flight school in Saudi Arabia is opening its doors to women, following the end of a decades-long driving ban. Oxford Aviation Academy, a leading trainer and crew recruiter, has already received applications from hundreds of women hoping to start lessons in September at a new branch in the eastern city of Dammam. Students will receive three years of academic and practical training, said Othman al-Moutairy, executive director of the branch.

瑞典開通首條充電公路
The world's first electrified road that recharges the batteries of cars and trucks on the run has been opened in Sweden. The electric rail has been embedded in a public road near Stockholm, linking Stockholm Arlanda airport to a nearby logistics site over a stretch of 2 km. This electrified road is an important step forward in Sweden's long-term energy strategy and its efforts to combat climate change. The road transfers electricity from an underground rail into the batteries of cars through a flexible arm attached to the charging vehicle. Each kilometer of electrified road currently costs roughly 1 million euros, 50 times cheaper than installing an overhead tram line over the same distance.

>Chinese firms increase presence

A record 120 Chinese companies have squeezed into the latest Fortune Global 500 list, only six fewer than the top performer, the US. This marks the 15th consecutive year that the country's companies have increased their presence on the list. Three of the top five companies on the list are from China. The State Grid was ranked second, followed by the State-owned energy giants Sinopec Group and China National Petroleum Corp. Thirteen Chinese companies made the list for the first time, including China Merchants Group, Xiamen Xiangyu Group, Ansteel Group, China Taiping Insurance Group and Haier Group. Listed Chinese companies were mainly involved in the internet, retail, finance, energy and property. For the fifth year in a row, US retail giant Walmart topped the list, with a massive $500.34 billion in revenue in 2017. According to Fortune, the world's 500 largest companies generated about $30 trillion in revenue last year, an increase of 8.3% year-on-year, with total profits amounting to $1.88 trillion, up by 23% compared to the previous year.
