Michael Kors is buying the Italian fashion house Gianni Versace in a deal worth more than $2 billion, continuing its hard charge into the world of high-end fashion. The deal, announced Tuesday, follows the New York handbag maker's $1.35 billion acquisition of the shoemaker Jimmy Choo last year. Michael Kors, like others in the fashion industry, is trying to fire up sales by tacking on big-name brands like the globally revered Versace. Tapestry, once known as Coach, owns Stuart Weitzman and last year it acquired Kate Spade. By all accounts, Kors has successfully melded Jimmy Choo into its portfolio, putting up big sales in the most recent quarter.

Ardern is her country's youngest head of state and the first to take maternity leave while in office. Her partner Clarke Gayford, who is the baby's full-time caregiver, sat with the New Zealand delegation and held Neve as Ardern spoke. Gayford posted a photo on Twitter of Neve's security pass for the annual gathering of world leaders in New York this week. He added: "I wish I could have captured the startled look on a Japanese delegation inside the UN yesterday who walked into a meeting room in the middle of a nappy change." The UN was delighted to see baby Neve in the General Assembly Hall, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

A chemical designed to mimic the smell of sandalwood has the power to stimulate hair growth in humans, according to a new study. Though the research was undertaken using scalp tissue in a laboratory, the scientists behind the discovery say they could be on the cusp of effectively treating hair loss. "This is actually a rather amazing finding," said Ralf Paus, a scientist at the University of Manchester who led the research. "This is the first time ever it has been shown the remodeling of a normal human mini-organ [a hair] can be regulated by a simple, cosmetically widely-used odorant."

Moderate coffee drinking is safe, and three to four cups a day may have some health benefits, according to a large review of previous studies. It found a lower risk of liver disease and some cancers, and a lower risk of dying from stroke — but researchers could not prove coffee was the cause. Too much coffee during pregnancy could be harmful, the review confirmed. Experts said people should not start drinking coffee for health reasons or to prevent disease.
