>Spring vegetable hits market
'香椿自由'成中產(chǎn)新標(biāo)準(zhǔn)?
First it was cherries. Now, the young red leaves of the Chinese toon tree are being talked about as a gauge of financial health among the middle class. The spring vegetable, which tastes a bit like onion and is used in a variety of dishes, is not cheap. And in some places in the north of the country, like Beijing, its popularity has been driving up prices. It has been selling for 80 yuan to 200 yuan for 500g at markets in Beijing in recent weeks, China News Service reported. That has led some consumers to take to social media, complaining they can no longer afford to buy the vegetable, which is known as xiangchun in Chinese. One post on microblogging site Weibo, which has drawn more than 10,000 comments, claimed a bunch of the leaves could now cost as much as a lobster, 10 abalone, or 39 crayfish. "You can buy this [vegetable] to show off your wealth," one person commented. Another said: "There's plenty of xiangchun trees at my grandmother's house. I feel like I've just found the path to riches." The first spring leaves of the tree are traditionally used in Chinese cooking, especially in the north where it is fried with eggs, mixed with tofu, or used in stuffing for dumplings.

Apple Inc attempted to reintroduce itself on Monday as an entertainment and financial services company that also makes iPhones as it launched a streaming television service, a credit card and an online gaming arcade. The programming will come through a revamped television-watching app for users of Apple's 1.4 billion gadgets worldwide, as well as owners of smart TVs and other devices. Apple is taking a different approach by offering paid "channels" from AT&T Inc's HBO, Lions Gate Entertainment's Starz and CBS Corp's Showtime, alongside its own content. Its revamped app for subscribing to channels from others will come out in May, but Apple's own original shows will not arrive until autumn, with pricing not yet announced. Apple said both its TV+ shows and the new version of the TV app will be available in more than 100 countries. Apple also introduced a credit card, a digital video game arcade, and added hundreds of magazines to its news app. The launches come as Apple struggles with falling iPhone sales, which has prompted the company to turn more of its attention to services that provide regular subscription revenue.

>Time really getting faster

It's one of those slightly unfair-seeming facts of life, that as you get older, time seems to get faster and faster – especially when compared to the endless summers of childhood. But physics might offer an explanation. According to Professor Adrian Bejan of Duke University, "People are often amazed at how much they remember from days that seemed to last forever in their youth. It's not that their experiences were much deeper or more meaningful, it's just that they were being processed in rapid fire." Bejan believes it's due to how many new images people are processing - which tails off with age due to physical changes in the human body. Because infants process images faster than adults, their eyes move more often, acquiring and integrating more information.

>Holiday spurs May tourism

According to a State Council announcement on Saturday, this year's May Day holiday in China will be expended from a single day off to a four-day holiday, with April 28 and May 5 as working days. Ctrip, an online travel agency headquartered in Shanghai, said that the search volume for tour packages bound for Chengdu, Sanya, Hangzhou and Kunming rose over 7 times compared to last week - and just three hours after the holiday adjustment was released. Ctrip also estimated that about 150 million trips would be made during the period. Data cited from Fliggy, Alibaba's travel agency in Hangzhou, shows that reservations for domestic flights increased by 50% compared with the same time period last week until 12 pm, and international flights rose by 150%.
