Social media executives could spend up to three years in prison and have their firms fined 10% of the turnover if they fail to quickly remove violent material from their platforms, according to a new law proposed by the Australian government. The March 15 massacre in Christchurch, New Zealand, in which 50 worshippers were killed at two mosques, was carried out by a suspected white supremacist who livestreamed the killings on Facebook, raising criticism of the role of social media in society. "Big social media companies have a responsibility to take every possible action to ensure their technology products are not exploited by murderous terrorists," Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a statement. "It should not just be a matter of just doing the right thing. It should be the law."

A budget Malaysian carrier has apologized after it sparked outrage with a sleazy advertising slogan urging tourists to "get off in Thailand". AirAsia used the tongue-in-cheek message - alluding to the country's vast sex industry - on buses and at the airport in Brisbane, Australia, to promote the airline's direct flights from Brisbane to Bangkok. But the message angered campaigners who said it promoted the sexual exploitation of women. AirAsia later removed the ads and apologized for causing offense. Thailand is one of the sex tourism capitals of the world. The country has almost 125,000 sex workers, according to the UN.

>Rare Harry Potter book sold
初版'哈利波特'60萬拍出

A rare copy of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" has sold at auction for ￡68,000. The unique copy was one of only 500 first editions to feature multiple mistakes, including misspelling the title "Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone" on the back cover and having Harry's school equipment list include the item "1 wand" twice. JK Rowling's full name, Joanne Rowling, also appears within the book, while the author's handwritten signature appears in the copy. Of the 500 first editions that were printed, around 300 are thought to have gone into libraries, meaning fewer are in pristine condition.

二代中繼衛(wèi)星成功發(fā)射

China sent a new data relay satellite into orbit from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province late Sunday night. The Tianlian II-01 satellite was launched at 11:51 pm by a Long March-3B carrier rocket. As the first satellite to constitute China's second-generation data relay satellite network, the Tianlian II-01 will provide data relay, measurement and control, transmission services for manned spacecraft, satellites, carrier rockets and other nonspacecraft users. The Tianlian II network will be markedly more advanced in mission planning, system management and operations than the first-generation network composed of Tianlian I satellites. The new network, with faster data transfer and higher multiobjective service capability, will play an important role in improving transmission promptness, in-orbit security and mission flexibility for medium- and low-Earth orbiting satellites and manned spacecraft.
